Ward Centers gets 4 new merchants

Four new merchants will be opening at Ward Centers this summer. They are Curry King, which specializes in Japanese curry dishes; The Watch & Jewelry Co.; San Lorenzo Bikinis & Clothing; and Ninja Sushi.

Pa‘ina Cafe also has relocated to a bigger location at Ward Warehouse that was previously occupied by the Chowder House.

State energy efficiency rally set

IConserve, an energy-saving campaign for state offices, will be introduced Wednesday at the state Capitol Rotunda.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz will be featured speakers at the rally that is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. and is open to the public. State employees from 16 departments, along with government officials and legislators, also will be on hand.

Energy-saving giveaways such as CFL and LED lights and advanced power strips will be available while supplies last.

There will be entertainment by Jive Nene, a band composed of energy advocates Jeff Mikulina (Blue Planet), Mark Glick (state Energy Office), Isaac Moriwake (Earthjustice) and singer Simone Cole.

Hawaii APEC showcase deadline near

Hawaii businesses have until Thursday to apply for the APEC 2011 Hawaii Business Innovation Showcase, which will provide an opportunity for businesses registered in the state to showcase innovation in businesses, products and services to an international audience.

The Host Committee is looking for businesses and business-related projects that are attractive to markets outside Hawaii, including the APEC member economies; have developed unique, leading and cutting-edge innovations in product development, technology, marketing or delivery; have positively affected Hawaii’s business environment; have growth and investment potential; and have adopted environmentally sound programs and practices.

The Showcase will recognize up to 35 Recognition of Excellence awards from county submissions. In addition, a winner from each county and one overall statewide winner will be selected. Awardees will be recognized at various APEC Hawaii programs. Businesses can visit www.apec2011hawaii.com to download an application form. Submissions should include information about the organization, qualifications and expertise, and a project description. Announcement of the Business Innovation Showcase awards is Sept. 1.

The APEC 2011 Leaders’ Week will take place in Honolulu on Nov. 7-13 with the Leaders’ Meeting on Nov. 12-13.

Central Pacific added to Russell 3000

Central Pacific Financial Corp. was added to the Russell 3000 index after the market closed Friday after meeting capital thresholds. Numerous investment funds, such as mutual funds, align their portfolios with the Russell and other indexes, which means that new companies added to the index automatically will be purchased by these funds.

Central Pacific’s stock rose 13 cents Monday to $13.22.

Enterprise Zone seminar is today

A 9 a.m.-to-noon seminar today will instruct local businesses on how to reduce the cost of doing business via the Enterprise Zone Program.

The free seminar in the Mauka Meeting Room of the Koolau Ballrooms will feature officials from the state Department of Taxation; Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism; and the City and County of Honolulu explaining the Enterprise Zone process and answering questions.

Hawaii has several Enterprise Zones, which are specific geographic areas targeted for economic revitalization and are targeted to stimulate growth in such industries as agriculture, biotechnology and information technology in the hope of increasing employment in those sectors.

RevoluSun has named Michael Latch as its Hawaii-based director of technology. He has worked in the technology industry for the past 13 years, including as a nuclear magnetic research group programmer at Research Corp. of University of Hawaii.

Nancy Lewis, director of the East-West Center’s Research Program, has been named president of the Pacific Science Association. Prior to her East-West Center position, she was associate dean of the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Social Sciences from 1993 to 2001.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has named new leaders to the sales and account services:

» Michelle Lewellen as account manager. She was previously a registered nurse at Blood Bank of Hawaii as well as staff nurse with Kaiser Permanente at its Waipio Clinic and Moanalua Medical Center.

» Michelle Alani as a sales coordinator. She was previously working in the accounting department with Warehouses District Flooring in Kailua-Kona, as well as serving in a variety of customer service positions at Kaiser Permanente on Hawaii island.

» Garriann Montalbo as sales coordinator. She was previously an account representative at University Health Alliance and worked nine years as sales and account manager at Kaiser Permanente.

» Julie So as sales coordinator. She previously worked for Kanpai Bar and Grill in Honolulu and as sales account manager with Cox Radio Hawaii.
