NEW YORK » Larry Ellison, who owns 98 percent of Lanai as well as local commuter Island Air, is the fifth-richest person in the world, according to Forbes magazine's annual ranking of the world's top billionaires.
Ellison, 69, founder of software giant Oracle Corp., has an estimated worth of $48 billion. Ellison ranked third in the U.S.
Honolulu resident and eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, 46, is also on the list. He's ranked as the 162nd-richest billionaire in the world with an estimated worth of $8.2 billion.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, 58, once again topped the list of the richest in the world, Forbes announced Monday. Gates, who led the list for 15 of the past 20 years, won the spot back from Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helu, 74, who had topped the list for the past four years. Gates' net worth is estimated at $76 billion; Slim Helu follows at $72 billion.
Spanish clothing magnate Amancio Ortega, 77, known for the Zara retail chain, maintained his No. 3 spot.
