Honolulu Festival aids tourism, unity

The three-day Honolulu Festival, which takes place March 1 to 3, is expected to bring 4,500 visitors, who will celebrate the culture, customs and traditions of Asians and Pacific islanders and spend nearly $11 million.

The festival, which was founded in 1995, helps fill hotel rooms and boost revenues throughout the visitor industry.

However, its main purpose is to foster Pacific harmony.

"The Honolulu Festival helps us bridge cultural bonds and share our people, place and culture," said Mike McCartney, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

About 10,000 to 15,000 people, including tourists and residents, are expected to attend each day. At 4:30 p.m. March 3, a grand parade featuring performers from the Asia-Pacific region will wind down Kalakaua Avenue, followed by the Naga­oka Fireworks Show at Waikiki Beach at 8:30 p.m.
