Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for a five-story, 200,000-square-foot hospital building.

The building will house 70 neonatal intensive care units and 14 pediatric intensive care units, and will provide training space for future OB-GYN and pediatric care professionals.

The $120 million project is slated for completion in spring 2016 and anticipated to open in fall 2016.

It is the first patient services facility to be built as part of Kapiolani’s $800 million redevelopment project to expand Hawaii’s only full-service children’s specialty hospital.

The hospital completed construction of a new $26 million parking garage a year ago.

Kapiolani had not done major renovations for more than 30 years and purchased a 1-acre site for the parking garage in 2004.
