Mark Twain never forgot sights, scents of the isles

  • HAWAII STATE ARCHIVES
When Mark Twain stayed at the Volcano House in 1866, Halemaumau was in full eruption. "We arrived just at the right moment to see it under full blast," Twain said. "The illumination was two miles wide and a mile high. The floor of the abyss was ringed and streaked and striped with a thousand branching streams of liquid and gorgeously brilliant fire!"

Hawaii helped launch Mark Twain's career, and it was forever in his heart after that. He's shown here in an 1867 photograph by Abdullah Freres.
