Architects of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Daniel K. Inouye Regional Center on Ford Island as well as two neighbor island homes received awards of excellence Tuesday night at the 57th annual Design Awards.

The winners were announced by the American Institute of Architects, Honolulu Chapter, before more than 250 attendees at the Hawaii Prince Hotel and Golf Club in Waikiki. An award of excellence requires a unanimous vote of the jury evaluating the project.

Architect Joseph Ferraro of Ferraro Choi and Associates Ltd. and lead design firm HOK collaborated on the Inouye center to receive the Institutional Award of Excellence as well as the Mayor’s Choice Award.

There were two winners for Residential Award of Excellence. One was Hut House in Kilauea, Kauai, with architect Lorena Yamamoto of Roy K. Yamamoto Architect AIA Inc. and lead design firm Johnston Marklee. The other winner, Kahua Kuili in Kailua-Kona, was designed by architect Gregory Warner of Walker Warner Architects.
