BLESSINGS FOR PEACE | The Rev. Daiya Amano of the Hawaii Izumo Taishakyo Mission conducted a traditional Shinto purification and blessing ceremony yesterday at the Hiroshima Peace Bell to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Those in attendance were also invited to ring the bell, a replica of the Hiroshima Peace Bell given to Hawaii in recognition of the relationship between Honolulu and Hiroshima and their mutual support of peace among nations.

2 IS A CROWD ON THE WAVES: Surfers vied for every wave yesterday at the Ala Moana Bowl surf spot off the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, as one surfer began to bail out of a wave after spotting another already riding it. Surfers were disappointed with 3-foot surf on the South Shore yesterday, said Jim Howe, city Ocean Safety Division operations chief. The National Weather Service forecasts the surf will be up to 8 feet today into tomorrow and steadily decline into the weekend. It had predicted advisory-level (8-foot) surf for yesterday, but it has been coming up more slowly than anticipated.

SUSPECT IN COURT FOR ALLEGED ATTACK | Kevin N. Pacheco, who was shot at by state sheriff's deputies in Waipahu on Wednesday after allegedly driving a car toward a deputy, made his initial appearance in District Court yesterday. Prosecutors charged Pacheco with first-degree terroristic threatening on Saturday.
