Mars performs as Iz wins at Germany's Echo Awards

By Wayne Harada

Bruno Mars should make it three in a row when "The Lazy Song," his next single, is released May 9 from his best-selling "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" CD. Its ear-worthy and toe-tapping Jawaiian aura make it a natural for island contemporary radio play.

Already, "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade" from the album rocked to No. 1.

"The Lazy Song" — which the Hawaii artist co-authored — is about chillin', doin' nothing', takin' it easy, brah. Or, in island parlance, hang loose. ...

By the way, Mars was a performer at Germany's Echo Awards, where he was nominated for most successful newcomer of the year but didn't win. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Over the Rainbow" was the big hit-of-the-year winner, with the award accepted by local producer Jon de Mello, who was accompanied by daughter Kila (a Mountain Apple Co. employee). "Rainbow" has been a No. 1 smash in Germany, and the legacy of Bruddah Iz widens as the tune claims the No. 1 spot in France and Portugal. "Iz would not have believed this," said de Mello. ...

POT OF GOLD: Gwyneth Paltrow makes another "Glee" appearance this month and continues to establish roots with the Fox hit. Matthew Morrison, who lived and worked in Hawaii previously and now stars as Will Schuester in "Glee," is recording "Over the Rainbow" as a duet with Paltrow. It was the song he auditioned for the show, and he performed it on the Season 1 finale. Will it surpass the aforementioned Kamakawiwo'ole version, which already has surpassed the Judy Garland original in popularity? ...

WHEE, THE PEOPLE: Ex-pat Isaac Calpito, now a Broadway-based creative force, just earned most outstanding actor in a mockumentary at the L.A. Webfest. And his online "Thank You Next" was tagged most outstanding mockumentary. "I'm so excited!" Calpito emailed, adding, "I am choreographing and staging a number for Hugh Jackman for the 'Harlem Village Academies 2011 Benefit Celebration' at Jazz at Lincoln Center on April 5." Jackman, the film actor and Broadway star, is performing a number with children from Harlem Village Academy, and Calpito was asked to shape it. ...

Filmmaker Kenneth K. Martinez Burgmaier just won three awards for his "Raiatea Helm Live" DVD in the Aurora Awards Independent Film & Video Competition — platinum best of show, platinum best director and gold entertainment and musical live concert. These laurels cap the DVD's earlier Na Hoku Hanohano Award. ...

AROUND TOWN: Tony and Karen Ruivivar are visiting as he continues to recuperate from his liver cancer last year. ... There was quite a buzz last month when four Secret Service types descended upon Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar at the Royal Hawaiian Center. No, it wasn't President Ba rack Obama and wife Michelle; instead, it was Sen. Daniel K. Ino uye and wife Irene, who get Secret Service protection (Ino uye is the Senate's president pro tempore), greeted by the restaurant's GM, Tona Risso, and publicist, Mona Wood-Sword. Mrs. Ino uye mentioned that their pal Peter Ho, Bank of Hawaii chairman, president and CEO and chairman of the 2011 APEC Hawaii Host Committee, had recommended the Italian cuisine (they had Linguine alle Vongole — linguini and clams) of executive chef Nicola Sayada. Wood-Sword phoned Il Lupino owners Wolfgang and Peter Zweiner in New York. ...

And that's "Show Biz." ...
