HI'IKUA PREVIEWS DEBUT ALBUM | 1. Hoku Award finalist Mark Yamanaka, second from left, and Hawaiian 105 KINE staffer Lil' Guy, center, talked backstage with Hi'ikua -- Kalehua Krug, left, Blake Leoiki-Haili and Kamuela Kimokeo -- during the Hawaiian 105 KINE Aloha Friday Luncheon May 20 at Kani Ka Pila Grille. Yamanaka, a Hilo resident, was in Honolulu for two days of promotional appearances. Hi'ikua gave the audience a preview of the group's debut album. The official release date is next month, but a limited number were available for sale during the show.
MAILANI CD PARTY AT APT3 | 2. Mailani Makainai, center, was joined by her proud parents, Jesse Makainai Jr. and Sylvia Makainai, at the CD release party for her second solo album, "'Aina," May 19 at Apartment3. Makainai's first solo offering, "Mailani," was a Hoku Award winner in 2010, and "'Aina" is sure to be a contender in several categories in 2012.
'AUGUST' HOT AT DHT | 3. Jo Pruden (Violet Weston), left, celebrated with Alaura Ward (Jean Fordham) and Allen Cole (Steve Heidebrecht) at the opening-night reception for Manoa Valley Theatre's production of "August: Osage County" May 19 in Manoa. Pruden stars as the ruthless matriarch of a dysfunctional family. Ward and Cole have memorable scenes portraying an out-of-control teen and the man who plays on her desire for adventure.
'ALTAR BOYZ' OPENS AT DHT | 4. Diamond Head Theatre artistic director John Rampage was escorted by Christine Yasunaga, left, and director/choreographer Tammy Colucci at the opening-night pre-show sponsors' reception for "Altar Boyz" May 20 at DHT. Colucci was part of the team that developed the original concept into a long-running off-Broadway hit and does a great job with a talented cast at DHT.
5. "Altar Boyz" cast members Elitei Tatafu Jr. (Abraham), left, Garett T.K. Taketa (Luke) and Joel Libed (Mark) wasted no time getting to the post-show cast party at Buca di Beppo. All three give well-rounded performances playing members of a Christian boy band.
