1. Celebrity fashion photographer Russell Tanoue, second from left, celebrated his birthday with a "Super Birthday Party" July 9 at Pearl Ultralounge. Duane Komine, Amber Stone Napoleon, Leona Komine and Michelle Kim Stone had a reserved table for the private VIP party, a fundraiser for Tanoue's Project Shine program, which kicked things off with three hours of entertainment and a heavy pupu buffet before the club went public at 10 p.m.

2. Pearl GM Dan Punch welcomed Tia Carrere to the VIP party. Carrere entered the club without fanfare but was gracious about posing for photos — and a lot of VIP partiers wanted photos with her. For more Tanoue party photos, see www. honolulupulse.com.

3. Director R. Kevin Doyle, second from left, congratulated actors Q, left, and Moses Goods, flutist Tracy Hanayo Okubo and puppeteer Nicole Tessier after the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival production of "The Tempest" opened with a sold-out house July 8 at the ARTS at Marks Garage. It closes with a final show today at 3:30 p.m.

4. Manoa Valley Theatre was filled to capacity Tuesday evening when friends and colleagues of Glenn Cannon, left, threw a party to celebrate his career as an actor, director and longtime University of Hawaii faculty member. Cannon's wife Samsil compiled a video documenting his roles on Broadway and television in such shows as "Combat!," the original "Hawaii Five-0," "Magnum, P.I." and "Lost." Fellow actor-director David Farmer co-chaired the event on behalf of MVT and the Screen Actors Guild.

5. Dr. Kalani Brady, left, a talented singer/actor who is also Cannon's physician in real-life, serenaded him with "When I Was His Doctor," a parody of "If I Were A Rich Man" from "Fiddler On The Roof." The number was something of an inside joke since Cannon has played Tevye, the character who sings the song in the show, and years later directed Brady in the role. Also saluting Cannon was UH colleague Terence Knapp and Eddie Sherman, who entertained the crowd with five minutes of comic commentary about Cannon and his career.
