FAREWELL PERFORMANCE | Michael Nakasone acknowledged the crowd yesterday from Ala Moana Center's Centerstage following the last song, "Alohe Oe," after his final public concert as 21st bandmaster of the Royal Hawaiian Band. Nakasone is retiring.

SMOKIN' HOT | By yesterday afternoon lava from Kilauea Volcano had built a small delta, barely visible through the thick steam plume. Lava also remains active on the coastal plain, close to residences in Kalapana.

2 MUSEUMS COULD BECOME 1 | Vi Loo, left, chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Contemporary Museum, and Lynne Johnson, chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, signed a letter of intent yesterday to consider a proposal to merge their operations. The announcement comes as both arts organizations continue to cope with fallout from the economic downturn.

PEARL SUB LEADS CHARGE AT SEA | The Pearl Harbor submarine USS Tucson sailed in the Sea of Japan off South Korea's southeast coast yesterday as part of a massive joint U.S. and South Korean drill dubbed Invincible Spirit. The war games are being held after North Korea torpedoed a South Korean corvette in March, killing 46. Twenty U.S. and South Korean ships, 200 aircraft and 8,000 sailors and airmen are participating in the exercise, which runs through tomorrow. The Pearl Harbor destroyer Chung-Hoon also is involved in the exercises, led by the aircraft carrier George Washington.
