CONSULAR CORPS INAUGURAL BALL | 1. Patricia Lee, honorary consul of France, held a Hawaiian figure that was presented to her commemorate her year as dean of the Consular Corps of Hawaii. Lee concluded her term during the 2011 Consular Corps Inaugural Ball Feb. 19 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Lee's guests at her front-row table included Dr. Conrad Schloesser, left, Vicky Cayetano, Hawaii Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald, Peter C.K. Fong and Vilma Watumull Schloesser.
2. Former Gov. Ben Cayetano, left, congratulated incoming Consular Corps Dean Leoncio R. Cardenas, consul general of the Philippines. The formal dinner was served by the Monarch Room staff as is usual at black-tie events, but the "Taste of the Philippines" dessert items were laid out buffet-style outside the room and many attendees were standing in line for dessert during the formal program. Cardenas said near the end of his brief remarks that at future events he "will not compete with dessert."
3. Veteran diplomat Gladys Vernoy, honorary consul of Chile, took the lead in welcoming one of the corps' newest members, Dr. Michele Carbone, honorary consul of Italy, who assumed his post in December.
4. Barry Zlatoper, left, and her husband, R.J. "Zap" Zlatoper, honorary consul of Slovenia, enjoyed the cool of the Ocean Lawn patio with Marie Claire and J. Hans Strasser, honorary consul of Austria, and first-time attendee Cindy Paliracio.
5. Joyce Fasi, in pink, was escorted by her grandson, Charlie Fasi, second from left. They talked with EuroCinema Hawai'i board members Carmen DiAmore-Siah and Guido Carlo Pigliasco on the Ocean Lawn before dinner. Waikiki traffic was so congested that many attendees were trapped in gridlock for as long as 45 minutes getting from the Ala Wai to the hotel, but the Consular Corps Ball seems certain to rank as one of 2011's best black-tie events.
