Outrigger exec defends besmirched honor of Spam

By Ben Wood

POSTED:

OUTRIGGER HOTELS Vice President Barbara Campbell was quoted in a Nov. 22 Wall Street Journal story about the flap over whether passengers aboard the disabled Carnival Splendor cruise ship were actually served Spam. The cruise line vehemently denied media reports the crew resorted to serving up the Hormel product. Barbara was contacted as co-creator of the Waikiki Spam Jam, and, of course, came to the defense of the much-maligned luncheon meat. According to the article, "Ms. Campbell says she would have lobbied to crack open the cans. Her advice to passengers would have been simple: 'Grab some bread, a little mustard and give it a try.'" ...

BUSINESS EXECS Mark Yamakawa of the Queen's Health Systems, Anton Krucky of Tissue Genesis and Jeff Arce of The MacNaughton Group became divas for a final encore performance as the Child & Family Service "Supremes." The trio danced to a medley of Supremes music at a special mahalo celebration for their fellow CFS board members, volunteers and donors who helped to raise more than $525,000 through a '60s-themed event held earlier this fall. Their final performance was Nov. 17 at the Queen's Conference Center on the medical center campus. Since 1899, CFS has been serving the needs of children and families in crisis in Hawaii. ...

AFTER 22 YEARS, Anita Hall, one of the town's top singers, is relocating to Indianapolis to live with her 80-year-old dad. She had planned to move him here but that did not work out. Anita's birthday was Sunday. "Instead of a birthday or going-away party, some of my musical friends and I entertained the guests at the Life Foundation fundraiser held at the Sheraton Waikiki's Rum Fire Sunday," Anita said. Among those to share their gifts of song were Kristian Lei, Ginai, Julius Mina, Natalie Capino, Maila Gibson and Rolando Sanchez. The evening's promoter, Vacations Hawaii president Kevin Kaneshiro, provided the pricey cabana for Anita and friends. Others attending included Neva Rego, Betty Grierson and Wally Amos. Anita departs Dec. 11. Her schedule includes recording in Nashville followed by a Feb. 26 performance with maestro Matt Catingub and the Hartford Symphony. "I will come home some day," Anita vows, paraphrasing Gen. Douglas MacArthur's famous World War II promise when he left the Philippines. "I'm a badass like he was, too," Anita said. ...
