The Western Athletic Conference will take Hawaii into its fold next year, bringing membership back up to eight schools and giving a new dimension to UH athletics.
Yesterday, the WAC Presidents Council approved full UH participation in the conference starting July 1, 1979, provided the Rainbows’ probationary status with the NCAA is concluded. UH football, basketball, baseball, golf, swimming and tennis teams then will compete for WAC championships.
The probation, for NCAA rules violations, is due to end in April.
"We are delighted to announce the addition of the University of Hawaii," said Dr. William E. Davis, president of the University of New Mexico and chairman of the WAC Presidents Council. "We especially have been impressed with the positive effort displayed by Hawaii lately, and after a recent survey of their program, feel certain it will continue to progress and be a viable member of the conference."
Hawaii is spending $12 million to upgrade practice facilities for intercollegiate athletics, as well as physical education classes and intramurals. The Rainbow Warriors drew 40,701 for their first home football game this fall.
"I think we’ll be an asset to the conference, and I hope the other members will fund us an outstanding addition and a tough new competitor," UH Chancellor Douglas Yamamura said.
WAC Commissioner Stan Bates, meanwhile, said Hawaii "will make a solid contribution to the WAC in all competition and will become a very attractive member."
Current WAC members are Brigham Young, Colorado State, New Mexico, Texas-El Paso, Utah, Wyoming and San Diego State, which was admitted this year following the defection of Arizona and Arizona State to the Pac-10. The WAC also is considering admitting Nevada-Las Vegas in 1980.
