Store, conserve emergency water
On Oahu, we’ve now moved past the shop-and-prepare stage, to the brace-yourselves stage.
Of the myriad everyday items in our lives, precious few are absolutely essential to survival. At the top of the list is water, as evidenced by the cases of bottled water that flew off store shelves earlier this week. At the same time, the city’s Board of Water Supply had provided tips for storing water from the tap (www.boardofwatersupply.com).
With the storm upon us, though, water storing should turn to water conservation. Especially if the storm knocks out power, keep water use to a minimum, as pumps and equipment will be affected. Water should be for essentials — cooking, drinking and sanitation — and keep toilet-flushing to a minimum.
Who will be next at UH to get fired?
The firing of University of Hawaii-Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple raised allegations from critics — and Apple himself — who claimed he was ousted because powerful special interests within UH opposed his reforms.
Student leaders bemoaned the loss of a chancellor whose first priority was the students.
In response, UH President David Lassner offered soothing but vague comments, saying he hoped the students’ concerns "will help inform the interim chancellor."
So it will be interesting to see what kind of person UH leadership considers a worthy replace- ment — someone who connects well with students and strong leadership skills, or someone who will tread cautiously and feebly through UH’s political minefield. The regents could consider a candidate at its next full meeting on Aug. 21.
