Looks like Democratic Gov.-elect Neil Abercrombie is following through on his promise to reach out to state legislators. In fact, it seems he may be stocking his Cabinet with a couple of them.
Big Island Democratic Sens. Dwight Takamine and Russell Kokubun are said to be under consideration to head, respectively, the state Department of Labor and state Department of Agriculture. The names of Sens. Josh Green and Brian Taniguchi are being bandied about as well.
Such musical chairs could give Abercrombie, who gets sworn in on Monday, plum opportunities in appointing the legislative replacements.
And in the cases of the just-reelected Kokubun and Taniguchi, those would be for full four-year terms.
They were preseason picks to be Western Athletic Conference bottom feeders, like "a bunch of dogs," Coach Greg McMackin said. But look at the University of Hawaii football Warriors now: 9-3 overall, with a share of the WAC championship, a berth in the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl and a No. 25 national ranking.
Two so-so seasons after June Jones' departure, McMackin installed needed changes on offense and defense, preached hard work and persistence, and proudly watched the Warriors regain their bite.
Underdogs at the start of the season, they are big dogs now.
