The recent gunpoint robbery of a soccer mom waiting in her car while her daughter practiced at Kapiolani Park in broad daylight was a shocking crime, even in this day and age.

And while it’s a relief that the suspect is in police custody, there’s no reason for residents to let their guards down.

While riding the bus, taking a stroll outdoors or lounging at the beach, ditch the ear buds and stop staring at the smartphone. Even if you’re sitting in a vehicle outside a church — lock the door.

The brazen heist was a wake-up call for us to be vigilant even in the safest of neighborhoods.
