Election officials said that as of 7 p.m. that 12 polling places on Oahu are still open.

State law requires all polling places to be closed before the first vote tallies can be released.

Officials had hoped earlier tonight that the results could be released by 7 p.m.

Rex Quidilla, elections office spokesman, said the first results will include about half of the absentee mail-in ballots.

Quidilla said the elections office had hoped to count all the absentee votes for the first printout, but the large number of mail-in ballots slowed down the counting.
