A ROYAL PARTY
1. Hawaiian and Japanese themes were combined in various fashionable ways as the Friends of ‘Iolani Palace commemorated the 125th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawaii with the “Royal Garden Party 2010” Aug. 15 at the palace. Helen Spielman, left, chatted with event co-chair Puchi Romig, David and Eleanor Kawananakoa, co-chair Watters O. Martin Jr., and Christy Hassell during the cocktail hour. Martin noted that Kalakaua had encouraged closer ties between Japan and Hawaii.
THEY’RE DIVALICIOUS
2. Susan Kondo-Leong and Kelly Crowley co-hosted the grand opening party for Divalicious, their new boutique, Aug. 13 in the Aina Haina Shopping Center. For details contact divaliciousboutique@gmail.com.
HONG FILM FAIR STARS
3. Film icon James Hong, left, Tia Carrere and Willie K took a break during rehearsals for the James Hong Film Fair Aug. 20 at the Hawaii Theatre. Hong hosted a workshop-style program on acting and voice-overs in the afternoon and received a lifetime achievement award from Carrere and Willie during the Willie K Music Festival that evening.
THE PIPE GOES “BOLLY”
4. Event producer Mira Savara, left, DJ Sovern-T and dancer Willow Chang were the key players at “Bollywood Nights,” a full evening of “Bollywood” film clips, Indian music and dancing Aug. 20 at Pipeline Cafe. Savara put it together, Sovern-T played an excellent mix of music, and Chang performed as a featured entertainer.
“REUNION VIII” A HIT
5. Robin Kimura, left, and Candi Au welcomed Roger Jereza, Nohelani Cypriano and Doug Rivera to the “’70s Nightclub Reunion VIII” Aug. 14 at the Ala Moana Hotel. It was the first time Cypriano performed at Kimura’s popular reunion series; Rivera and his group, Glass Candle, were returnees -- and crowd-pleasers, as always. Nightlife veterans recognize Jareza as an original member of the Kasuals, and hopes are growing the original sextet can play “’70s NR IX” in 2011.
