REMEMBERING DUKE 1. Tim Guard, second from left, president of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, talked backstage with Kaukahi — Dean Wilhelm, left, Keale, Kawika Kahiapo and Barrett Awai — at the Great Hawaiian 105 KINE Lu'au on Aug. 28 at the Waikiki Aquarium. The sold-out party capped a week of events commemorating the 120th anniversary of Kahanamoku's birth on Aug. 24, 1890.
"HAPPY B-DAY, KIMI!" 2. Kimi Matar celebrated her birthday with a gala party co-hosted by her husband, Ash Matar, Aug. 21 at the Kahala Hotel & Resort. The couple's guests included "Hawaii Five-0" star Daniel Dae Kim and his wife, Mia; Robert Parks Valletta; pro surfer Hanna Cornett; and Jake Pavelka of "The Bachelor."
TIA LEARNS THE TRICK 3. Tia Carrere, fourth from left, was on the way to an open-air wine symposium Aug. 21 at the Kahala Hotel & Resort when she and Angela Laprete noticed hotel staffers were carrying 10 wine glasses in one hand. Carrere was so intrigued by their dexterity that she put off going to the symposium until Gerard Javier, left, Joe Ely and Renfred Riemedio showed her how to do it. (No wine glasses were broken in the making of this picture.)
THE SOS IS B-A-C-K! 4. Society Of Seven members Hoku Low, left, Tony Ruivivar and Elika Santos came out to meet the audience after their "homecoming" show received several standing ovations on opening night, Aug. 24, in the Main Showroom at the Outrigger Waikiki. After being based in Las Vegas for most of the last decade, the SOS is back in Waikiki. Low joined the group in August 1977. Santos made his official debut with the SOS here on the 24th.
"GHOSTS" AT KUMU 5. Kumu Kahua cast members Tracy Okubo, left, Ron Encarnacion, Thanh Apostolides and Tyler Tanabe enjoyed the party after "Ghosts in the Plague Year" opened Aug. 26 at the Kumu Kahua Theatre. Tanabe and Okubo star as a Japanese businessman and his wife. Apostolides has a small but important role as the businessman's sister.
