Obon dance across isles

POSTED:
LAST UPDATED: 09:25 p.m. HST, Jun 19, 2013

The Obon season perpetuates the Buddhist tradition of honoring family ancestors, who are said to return to the mortal world to visit relatives during the festival. The colorful bon dances, featuring taiko drums, food booths, games and other activities, have become a must-do cultural event for residents and visitors alike, regardless of religious affiliation.

CORRECTION
The bon dance at the Kona Hongwanji will be on July 27. An earlier version of this story and the story on May 27 had an incorrect date.

Wow! didn't know that there were that many temples in Hawaii, or that many Buddhist communicants in the Islands. Was raised a Buddhist, but confirmed as a Episcopalian in my teens on Kauai back in the 30'/40's. Now probably an Atheist.

Be sure to tune in to Hawai`i Public Radio at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 7, for the broadcast of "Obon," the hour-long one-of-a-kind program that will both entertain and educate you on obon, the traditions and the most popular minyo, the songs you'll want to dance to at the bon odori. That's on HPR2 (83.9 FM on O`ahu). Don't miss it.
