A grand night for Hawaiian music

Shawn Pimental, left, Kekuhi Kanahele and Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole relaxed backstage after performing for more than two hours — singing, chanting, making music and telling stories — June 17 at the Hawaii Theatre. A creatively personalized rendition of “Hi‘ilawe” and a fresh and decidedly up-tempo arrangement of “Hawaii ’78” were two highlight numbers in a grand night of modern Hawaiian music.
