Class to explore spirits and chocolate treats

What doesn't go with chocolate? The universally loved treat has been paired with everything from coffee and wine to cigars. Add whiskey to that list as Madre Chocolate explores the possibilities July 19 at its factory.

The caramelly sweetness and smoky flavor of scotches, bourbons and spirits are a great match for robustly flavored chocolates such as Madre's Chipotle Allspice and Hamakua Pink Peppercorn and Smoked Salt.

Sample a few pairings starting at 7:30 p.m. during an hourlong class. Fee is $30. Register at madrechocolate.eventbrite.com. The factory is at 20 Kainehe St. Call 377-6440 or see www.madrechocolate.com.

Chefs, CEO to discuss ethics in food industry

Chefs Beverly Gannon and Sheldon Simeon will join Aaron Placourakis, president and CEO of Tri-Star Restaurant Group, to discuss "Ethics in the Food Industry," a free panel lecture July 18.

The discussion is part of the summer "Will Weinstein Conversation Series 2013," focusing on ethical issues in business, health, food, sports and law.

It runs 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Kapiolani Community College's Ohia Building cafeteria. RSVP to 956-8478, 956-6926, www.law.hawaii.edu/weinstein or www.shidler.hawaii.edu/weinstein.

Talk to focus on food, emotional connection

Learn how food not only affects your weight and figure, but how it's connected to moods and emotions, at the "Body Confidence Cooking Class" on July 20.

Chef Leslie Ashburn will demonstrate how to create a plant-based meal that's flavorful, healthful and a hearty dish for those watching their weight. Ashburn will also discuss how to be mindful about hunger and fullness and how body image is tied to emotional issues. Participants will eat a light meal and take home recipes.

The class, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., will be held at a private home in Aina Haina. Cost is $50 through July 18 and $60 later. Register through July 19 at macrobiotichawaii.com.

Food, culture and health topics of forum at school

Consider Hawaii's access to food, food safety and how culture plays into food issues at a free forum, "Health Community, Healthy Island, Healthy World," presented by Punahou School, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 24.

The event will feature sessions with community experts, including Amy Brinker of Hawaii Food Policy Council, Dick Grimm of Hawaii Foodbank, Peter Oshiro of the state Department of Health and chef Mark Noguchi of Pili Hawaii.

The forum will convene at Punahou's Twigg-Smith Pavilion. Call 944-5871 or see www.punahou.edu/sgli.
