Cool treats are also healthful

The hot summer months are here, but you can stay cool with these frozen recipe treats bursting with the ripe flavors of summer fruit. And since the recipes require no cooking, you generate less heat in the kitchen, which keeps your home cooler and saves energy.

2 cups frozen berries

1 frozen banana, peeled and sliced

1 cup milk

1/2 cup plain or vanilla yogurt

1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

3 tablespoons honey

In blender, add all ingredients and process until smooth.

Pour into glasses and serve. Serves 2.

Note: Soy milk and soy yogurt may be substituted.

Approximate nutritional information, per serving: 450 calories, 5 g fat, 3 g saturated fat, 15 mg cholesterol, 100 mg sodium, 97 g carbohydrate, 8 g fiber, 81 g sugar, 9 g protein


2 cups orange or guava juice

2 bananas or other fresh fruit

2 cups ice

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 (6 ounce) container yogurt (optional)

In blender, add all ingredients and process until smooth.

Pour into glasses and serve. Serves 4.

Approximate nutritional information, per serving (using banana and without optional yogurt): 110 calories, 0.5 g fat, 0 g saturated fat, no cholesterol or sodium, 26 g carbohydrate, 2 g fiber, 7 g sugar, 2 g protein


2 cups milk

3/4 cup sugar

1-1/4 cups crushed pineapple

1/3 cup orange juice

1 teaspoon lemon juice

Combine milk and sugar; stir until sugar is dissolved. Add pineapple and juices.

Pour into plastic tub container, cover and freeze until firm. Stir once during freezing. Serves 6.
