Chinese keiki visit Oahu

The Shanghai Children's Palace Art Troupe will appear at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The group includes 45 youngsters, ages 10 to 17, who perform an array of Chinese choral works, folk, modern and ballet dances, and instrumental music.

The troupe last performed in Hawaii nearly 10 years ago. This year's appearance includes Olana Ai Hula Halau. While here the youngsters will visit Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center and entertain at the Children's Discovery Center.

The troupe is appearing courtesy of Hawaii National Bank and the U.S. China People's Friendship Association. A portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to Child and Family Service to support child abuse prevention and domestic violence programs.

Tickets are $35, $25 and $20, with a $5 discount for seniors, active military and children under 12. Tickets are available at the Blaisdell Box Office, or by phone through Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 or online at


Craft new bookmarks

Liliha Public Library is offering a free bookmark craft session for teens at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Instruction and recycled magnets will be provided to make a magnetic bookmark that slips over both sides of a page and holds securely in place. The one-hour activity, suitable for students ages 12 and up, will be featured during the library's "Teen Lounge" after-school program.

Good deals on kids' items available at benefit sale

Shoppers will be able to get good deals on children's consignment clothing at Rhea Lana's latest sale in Hawaii, a benefit for the Lokahi Giving Project.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and next Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 29 on the second floor of Windward Mall, next to Regal Theatres.

The national business helps parents earn money back from selling gently used children's and infant clothes, toys and furniture. A portion of every Rhea Lana sale made at the three-day event will help benefit local nonprofit and social service agencies, shelters, group homes and hospitals. To further support Lokahi, many of the unsold items will be donated for immediate use for families in need.

People interested in consigning items need to register online at The hours for drop-off at Windward Mall will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday.

Fun day at the zoo

A "family fun day and concert" is set to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Honolulu Zoo.

It's all to benefit the Lokahi Giving Project, presented by KHON. The station's "Wake Up 2Day" news team will act as emcees, with entertainment provided by Halau Hula o Hokulani, Maunalua, Frank De Lima and Tunui's Royal Polynesians.

There will be prize giveaways and keiki activities, including face painting, glitter tattoos and a bounce house. Admission is $10 general and $5 for children ages 4 through 12. Free parking is available at Jefferson School and in Lot Nos. 3 and 4 at the Waikiki Shell.
