Spot in World Cup unites Koreans around the world

For Sunday, June 13, 2010

By Jeff Chung

POSTED:

There are rare moments in time that can truly unite Koreans all around the world for one single purpose. That moment is taking place this month in South Africa during the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament.

South Korea is in Group B this year along with Greece, Argentina and Nigeria. At press time, South Korea was scheduled to play yesterday against Greece. Several hundred local Koreans and Korean tourists were expected to gather at the Waikiki Resort Hotel at midnight to support the national team. The next game is Thursday against global powerhouse Argentina. Korea will play against Nigeria on June 22 at 8:30 a.m. Hawaii time, when fans will converge again on the Waikiki Resort Hotel to watch Korean-language match coverage on KBFD.

If the South Korean soccer team does well in Group B, it will move on to the knockout round of 16 teams, no doubt further igniting passions in the Korean community here and around the world. Back in 2002, when Japan and South Korea co-hosted the World Cup, the Korean national team made it to the semifinals by defeating Spain in the quarterfinals. The Korean team eventually lost to Turkey to take fourth place—its best World Cup finish ever.
