REVIVING THE UKEKE
Ellie Hawkes, left, talked with ukeke maker Mahi La Pierre after his multimedia lecture on the ukeke, the only stringed instrument that is indigenous to Hawaii, Thursday at Bishop Museum. When La Pierre asked for a volunteer to join him in closing the presentation by playing “Hawai‘i Pono‘i” on ukeke, Hawkes stepped forward and selected an instrument. La Pierre gave her the ukeke she’s holding as a memento of their performance.
