Isle choir invited to sing at England's Ely Cathedral

The group will perform Dec. 7 in Honolulu

The Hawaii Sacred Choir, composed of both children and adults -- ranging in age from 7 to 73 -- will perform a free concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, 712 N. School St.

Formed three years ago by choirmaster Dan Werning, the group was recently invited to sing at Ely Cathedral in England from July 5 to 15. At the cathedral the choir will take on choir-in-residence responsibilities for daily evensong and a morning service on Sunday morning, according to a news release.The choir, which usually sings in English and Latin, will include a piece or two in Hawaiian in a lunchtime concert in Ely's Lady Chapel, which known worldwide for its acoustics.

In the release, Werning said, "We are the first-ever choirboy/choirgirl/adult choir from Hawaii to be invited to go to England to sing in one of their most famous cathedrals. Many famous recordings, both music and movie, have been recorded at Ely Cathedral: 'The King's Speech,' 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age,' 'The Other Boleyn Girl,'" among others.
