Local gamers will be using their skills to do good by participating in a 24-hour gaming marathon as part of Extra Life, an international charity event that raises money for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, including Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children.

In advance of the event, participants rally friends and family to sponsor their play, which can be anything from video and cellphone games to old-fashioned board games.

While about 90 percent of participants will play from home, the Armchair Adventurer game store in Kalihi will host a 24-hour Extra Life event starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. The store is located at 1287 Kalani St. No. 105.

Owner Robert Welch, who took over the store in April, said the Saturday-into-Sunday event will mainly feature games such as Twilight Imperium, Defenders of the Realm, Warmachine and Warhammer 40K, as well as Dungeons & Dragons and other role-playing games.

The public is welcome to participate, with the store able to accommodate 30 to 40 gamers at a time. While games will be provided, participants can bring their own and might want to pack some snacks too.

A team of nine gamers, including Welch, who will be playing out the marathon at the Armchair Adventurer, is close to meeting its goal of raising $1,000 for Kapiolani Medical Center but is hoping to far surpass that total.
