This map shows the epicenters and dates of earthquakes greater than magnitude 8 in the Aleutian Islands during the 20th century. The colored lines indicate the tectonically active zones, with the red line marking the zone that poses the greatest tsunami threat to Hawaii. The 1946 quake, magnitude 8.6, generated a tsunami that killed 159 people in the state.
