A mighty sponge lurks in the deep

The scientific journal Marine Biodiversity published a study this week describing the largest sponge known in the world, found at a depth of 7,000 feet within Papa- hanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. The sponge is close to 12 feet long and 7 feet wide — comparable in size to a minivan. It was discovered last summer by UH-Manoa biologist Christopher Kelley and a colleague during a deep-sea expedition aboard the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer.
