  • OFFICERS GET SECOND CHANCES

    Honolulu Police Department officers prosecuted in state court have an advantage over those prosecuted in federal court. The state gives second chances, called deferred acceptance of guilty or no-contest pleas. If the defendants stay out of trouble for a specified period, the charges are dismissed. Federal court doesn’t allow deferred pleas and often gives tougher sentences. Here are the successful criminal prosecutions of HPD officers since 2010 in the two court systems

Using the frame of his Taser, a Honolulu police officer struck a bystander’s hand as the man shot video of a friend’s arrest. The blow was strong enough to fracture the hand, according to court documents. Read more
