Pedestrian hit by vehicle dies of her injuries

A 52-year-old female pedestrian died Saturday after she was hit by a vehicle a day earlier in the Keeaumoku area.

Police said the woman was struck at the intersection of Sheridan and Rycroft streets at about 10:10 a.m. Friday.

A 27-year-old Honolulu man was turning onto Sheridan from Rycroft when he struck the woman, police said.

She was taken in critical condition to a hospital and died the next day.

She was the ninth pedestrian killed on Oahu’s roads this year. Her death was the 17th traffic fatality on the island this year, compared with 19 at this time last year.

Motorcyclist killed in crash on Valley Isle

A 48-year-old Kula, Maui, man died Saturday after crashing his motorcycle.

Police identified the victim as Robert Phillips Jr. and said he was riding an orange Enduro KTM motorcycle south on Lower Kula Road when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, crossed left of center and crashed into a utility pole on the opposite shoulder.

Phillips was not wearing a helmet and was taken in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died.

The crash happened at about 6 p.m. Saturday.

It was Maui’s seventh traffic fatality this year compared with four at this time last year.

Kayaker rescued after calling 911 off Maui

Maui firefighters and lifeguards came to the aid of a kayaker who called 911 Saturday, saying he couldn’t make it back to shore in rough conditions.

The man, in his 40s, was about a half-mile off Ukumehame, West Maui.

Lahaina firefighters arrived at the shore at 1:30 p.m.

Offshore wind — blowing more than 30 mph — creating whitecaps and ocean spray made it difficult for fire crews to locate the kayaker, Maui County said in a release Sunday. He was eventually spotted roughly 300 yards off Papalaua State Wayside Park.

Crews noticed a boat nearby and by VHF radio asked for the crew’s help.

At 1:39 p.m. the boat brought the man and his kayak aboard and took him to Maalaea Harbor. The man, a Lahaina resident, did not require medical attention.

Suspect charged with theft in jewelry caper

A 28-year-old man has been charged with fleeing from a Ward-area jewelry store with five stolen diamond rings, police said.

Ridge Santiago was charged Friday with second-degree theft, and his bail was set at $25,000. He was arrested at Oahu Community Correctional Center, where he was being held over an unrelated offense.

Police said Santiago ran out of a jewelry store with five diamond rings at about 8:35 p.m. March 15. He was later identified and arrested Friday.

Nanakuli man charged in assault on woman

A 44-year-old man was charged with several offenses after he threatened and assaulted a woman in Nanakuli, police said.

Joseph Caspino of Nanakuli took the woman’s vehicle without permission, then assaulted and threatened her at about 8:40 a.m. May 6, police said. Caspino later allegedly threatened a responding officer.

Caspino was arrested Friday and charged later that day with second-degree assault and terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $100,000.

Police officer injured during woman’s arrest

A 63-year-old woman was charged Saturday with assaulting a police officer while being booked for a separate offense in Kalihi, police said.

Sun Cha Choi, who has no local address, was charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer. Her bail was set at $20,000.

Police said Choi injured a 40-year-old female officer while being booked at the Kalihi substation for another offense at about 11:15 a.m. Friday. Police did not disclose the initial arresting offense.
