Brush-clearing operation accidentally sparks 2-acre fire
Honolulu firefighters extinguished a 2-acre brush fire Monday near the Kalaeloa Airport.
The fire, which was on state land, was inadvertently started during a routine brush-clearing operation, Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 1:40 p.m. and were able to contain the blaze by 2:30 p.m.
The fire was below a National Guard hangar and above the airfield.
No structures were threatened and no operations were affected by the fire.
Family of 4 gets help after getting lost on Pupukea trail
A woman and her three grandchildren were escorted to safety by fire rescue personnel Monday night after getting lost along the Kaunala Trail in Pupukea.
The four set out at about 3 p.m. Monday but were unable to make their way back by sundown.
Fire rescue personnel were alerted when the group failed to return home on time. They hiked the trail for about three hours before finding the hikers at about 9 p.m., said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.
Maui man dies after being found in waters off Hana
A 53-year-old Kuau, Maui, resident died Monday afternoon after being pulled from the ocean at Koki Beach in Hana.
Fire rescue personnel were called to the scene at about 2:15 p.m. Beachgoers had pulled the man out of the water and had started CPR. The firefighters assisted with CPR until paramedics arrived.
The man was transported to Hana Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
Group of 4 hikers airlifted from trail following call for aid
Fire rescue personnel assisted four hikers after a planned two-day hiking trip went astray in the Koolau range.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said the four hikers, local men in their 20s, set out on Friday intending to hike from Kahana to Pupukea along the Koolau ridgeline. The group, which had supplies for two days, got lost over the weekend and called for help Sunday at 10:40 a.m.
Fire rescue workers were able to quickly locate the hikers and airlifted them to safety Sunday. The hikers were examined by Emergency Medical Services personnel but did not require further medical care.
