Broken water mains afflicted Waikiki and Waipahu on Sunday.
Board of Water Supply crews worked overnight Saturday to finish repairs to a 12-foot section of pipeline at 1850 Ala Moana Blvd., but Ewa-bound lanes remained closed until 4:30 p.m. Sunday, said a Board of Water Supply spokeswoman.
The main broke at about 6 p.m. Saturday, flooding the busy street with several inches of water near the IHOP restaurant, which was also flooded.
"Our business was greatly affected," said manager Chey Hunn. "We were closed from the time of the break to — I think we ended up getting out of here at 5 (minutes) after midnight."
The restaurant was closing early Sunday so that carpet cleaners could work, Hunn said.
Repairs prompted westbound traffic to be diverted onto Ena and Kalia roads.
A bypass system set up by 11 p.m. provided water service to the single water customer initially affected by the break.
Overnight pipeline repair, which involved the removal and replacement of about 12 feet of pipe, was completed by 4 a.m., and a paving contractor began to repave the road shortly thereafter.
But the road surface needed several hours to cure.
The Board of Water Supply said the main was originally installed in 1949.
In Waipahu on Sunday a break in a 12-inch water main closed Hianakiu Street near the intersection with Waipahu Street, according to the Board of Water Supply.
The break, which happened at about 6 a.m., left about 60 customers without water, Tracy Burgo said.
Two water wagons provided water at 94-529 Hiapaiole Loop and 94-470 Hiapaiole Loop.
Police reopened one lane of Hianakiu Street at about 10:45 a.m.
Crews restored water service by 3:30 p.m. to the 60 customers who lost service.
Records show that the main was installed in 1971.
