The Glomar Explorer, owned by Howard Hughes’ Summa Corp., anchored off Maui 40 years ago, the year it was sent to recover the sunken Soviet ballistic missile submarine K-129. The ship’s claw arms snapped as crews attempted to raise the sub, but a portion of the vessel was recovered. The Russians were told the Glomar was on a deep-ocean mining project.
