It is rare when coach Dave Shoji carries 20 on the roster, including redshirts, but there is an abundance of talent and versatility in that deep pantry.

Kaleo Baxter, Volunteer Assistant Coach

James Buccella, Volunteer Equipment Coordinator

Kayla Kaluau, Team Manager

The staples of the 2012 recipe are second-team All-America middle-back-to-hitter Emily Hartong, along with all-conference picks Mita Uiato, a junior setter, and sophomore hitter Jane Croson. Junior libero Alyssa Longo, a transfer from Penn State, looks to be the back-row ingredient needed, complemented by the skills of senior defensive specialist Emily Maeda.

The mystery ingredients are the middle blockers, four vying for two spots. Junior Kristiana Tuaniga, sophomores Kalei Adolpho and transfer Stephanie Hagins, and redshirt freshman Jade Vorster will be added in at some point.

The right side is a crucial element, with sophomore Kaela Goodman the most experienced. But junior transfer Ashley Kastl and true freshman Tai Manu-Olevao can play either right or left and, with 15 substitutions allowed this year, a pinch of this and a dash of that is likely to happen as Shoji experiments with his chop suey.

Talking stink about Shoji is like cutting Medicare. Not a road you want to go down and continue to live in Hawaii.
