On Thursday, Hawaii became the 48th state in which Al Whitney -- the "Pied Piper of Platelets" -- has donated blood. Whitney, a retired 75-year-old factory worker from Ohio, has only Montana and Wyoming left to complete his nationwide "Platelets Across America" tour, an effort to raise awareness about the importance of whole blood and platelet donations. Nurses Emi Yamane, right, and Rowie Pabiton did the honors at the Blood Bank of Hawaii's Dillingham Donor Center as Whitney made his 708th platelet donation on World Blood Donor Day.
