The Honolulu Fire Department presented awards to civilians and firefighters during a ceremony Wednesday at the department's training center. Carl Loando, 54, foreground, received the department's Civilian Medal of Valor for his actions April 27 when he rescued Helen Choy from a burning house near Maunalani Heights. Choy, who is in her 80s, uses a wheelchair. Loando is being congratulated by firefighter Wesley Pratt, left, who was given an HFD Medal of Valor for rescuing a fellow firefighter who received an electric shock while fighting a building fire on the North Shore. Christopher Newman, standing behind Loando, was awarded a Certificate of Commendation for helping Choy after Loando dragged her out of the burning home.
