United Flight 811, piloted by Capt. David Cronin, landed safely at Honolulu International Airport on Feb. 24, 1989 after a cargo door blew out over the Pacific Ocean about 15 minutes after take-off. Nine passengers died, but 346 people survived. The plane lost two engines and suffered extensive structural damage during the "explosive decompression" incident.
