Inouye advocated for Hanabusa to take his place in U.S. Senate
U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye and Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa had grown close in the last few years, and Inouye expressed the wish that she be appointed to succeed him in the Senate. The two met at a graduation ceremony last year for the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Apprentice Program. Gov. Neil Abercrombie will choose Inouye's replacement from a list of three people recommended by the Democratic Party of Hawaii.
