Island Images: Waikane Valley, Jan. 2013

After decades of struggle to preserve Waikane Valley, landowner Paul Zweng has plans to restore the native habitat and try to cultivate a small cacao farm. Ohulehule Forest Conservancy LLC has won support from the community, which fought against housing and a golf course. Above, Zweng uses a hatchet to notch the lower portion of the trunk of an Albizia tree (which is an invasive species). He will then inject a bit of herbicide into the notches to kill it.
