Sensor network to track nuclear activity expands to other uses

A station that detects low-frequency sound waves in the atmosphere picked up the meteor that fell over Russia last week. A so-called "infrasound" station in West Hawaii spotted the signal about 5 a.m. Friday, Hawaii time, according to station chief Milton Garces, an associate researcher at the University of Hawaii. The station is part of a network set up to detect nuclear detonations under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
