Eagle Scout Avery Horton of Troop 135 saved a man's life while hiking down the Manoa Falls trail last November. Horton was helping out on a hike for his brother's Cub Scout pack when a man on the hike fell down and started sliding down a steep cliff. Without regard to his own safety, Horton grabbed a tree limb and hung over the cliff to rescue the fallen hiker, Timothy Raines, who was on his honeymoon in Hawaii and joined his nephew, a Cub Scout, on the hike. The Manoa Falls trail has been the site of several hiking accidents, some even requiring helicopter rescues. Because of his heroic act, Horton was awarded the Honor Medal from the National Boy Scouts of America.

For Boy Scouts in Hawaii and in the United States, 2010 marks 100 years of Scouting. Each Sunday throughout the year, the Star-Advertiser will present historic photographs and factoids to help commemorate the centennial.
