Firefighters rescue 2 stranded hikers

Two hikers were plucked from Oahu trails over the weekend.

A female hiker in her 40s hurt her head and leg in a fall yesterday at Manoa Falls, the Honolulu Fire Department said.

Firefighters responded to the call at about 4 p.m.

Crew members from the Manoa Station hiked up the trail and reached the woman at 4:34 p.m., fire officials said.

Her injuries were described as not life-threatening.

She was lifted off the trail by helicopter at about 5:20 p.m. and transferred to an ambulance at Noelani Elementary School.

On Saturday night a man who passed out on a trail above Waimano Home Road called 911 when he woke up after dark, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The man said he took the bus to the top of Waimano Home Road and hiked in earlier in the day, and it was dark when he woke up, said HFD Capt. Earle Kealoha. The trail in the Koolaus can be treacherous at night.

The Fire Department received the call just after 11 p.m. and dispatched a rescue helicopter and a fire rescue team to the trail head.

Firefighters reached the man about a half-hour later and escorted him back to the trail head.
