Longtime Hawaii County Councilman Jimmy Arakaki and his wife, Grace, donated $15,000 to establish an endowed scholarship to benefit business students at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, which will match their donation.

Beginning this fall, the James and Grace Arakaki Endowed Excellence Scholarship will be awarded annually to a local student who has been honorably discharged from active U.S. military service, or who is the son or daughter of a veteran.

The Mike Sakamoto Memorial Scholarship committee and the nonprofit Pacific Islands Fisheries Group have awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarship funds. Reyn Yoshioka of Hilo High School; Casey Chikuma and Anthony Young of 'Iolani; and Kekainani Lucero of Moanalua each received $2,500.

Local fishing icon Mike Sakamoto, best known as host/producer of the "Fishing Tales" TV program, died in January 2009.

The 16th Annual First Hawaiian Bank - REHAB Golf Tournament raised $230,000 to fund Charity Care and educational scholarships for clinicians at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific (REHAB). It was held at the Hawaii Prince Golf Course May 26.
