4 men arrested at Big Isle cockfight

Big Island police raided a cockfight at a residence in Hamakua.

Police served a search warrant at about 8:15 p.m. Thursday and arrested four men in conjunction with cockfighting activity. The search led to the recovery of seven dead and injured roosters -- five of which had metal spurs, or "gaffs," affixed to their legs -- a poultry scale, bullets, a firearm and $754 in cash.

Police said that about 75 people were in attendance.

Erwin Valenzuela was charged yesterday with 10 counts of cruelty to animals, two firearms offenses and one count of gambling. His bail was set at $6,500. Ernest Valenzuela was charged with 10 counts of cruelty to animals and one count of gambling, and his bail was set at $5,500.

The two other men were released pending further investigation.

Visitor helps rescue hiker

An 18-year-old man was rescued in a joint operation late Thursday after he was found on a trail in Kauai suffering from extreme heat exhaustion.

A Coast Guard pilot visiting from Oregon spotted the man at about 10:30 p.m. on the Kalalau Trail. He looked like he was possibly going into shock.

The pilot hiked out of the valley and called 911, according to a news release by the Kauai Fire Department. The pilot also sought help from the Coast Guard in Honolulu, informing them that it was an urgent matter.

Two Hanalei firefighters hiked into the valley with one posted at Windy Point -- located about a quarter-mile from the trail head -- for communications. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard dropped off a crew member at Hanakapiai Beach. Firefighters and the crew member placed the victim on a stretcher and carried him down to the beach.

The Coast Guard then airlifted the man to Lihue Airport where paramedics were waiting to transport him to Wilcox Hospital. His current condition is not known, according to the Fire Department.

Big Island police arrested a Hawi couple for drug offenses, including growing marijuana.

North Kohala patrol and vice officers served a search warrant on a Kaahuhu Road home in Kohala and found 102 marijuana plants, 340 grams of processed marijuana, more than seven grams of hashish and growing equipment inside the home. Officers also seized $2,990 in cash for forfeiture.

Jules Laramee, 58, was charged Wednesday with commercial promotion of marijuana, promoting a detrimental drug, promoting a harmful drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was released that evening after posting $17,500 bail.
