Maui man is convicted of murder in shooting death of son at home

By Associated Press

WAILUKU » A Maui man who fatally shot his son has been convicted of second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The verdicts against 47-year-old Joe D. Antonio were returned Tuesday by Circuit Judge Joel August.

Nineteen-year-old Jose Antonio Jr. was shot to death in 2008 at the family's residence in Kahului.

Defense attorney Philip Lowenthal said during closing arguments that the senior Antonio was under extreme mental or emotional disturbance at the time of the shooting and should either be acquitted or convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Antonio faces a minimum 20 years in prison when he is sentenced to mandatory life with the possibility of parole.
