A 57-year-old college professor from New York state died Tuesday from injuries sustained when a car hit him in Kaneohe on Monday evening.

The medical examiner identified the victim as Douglas Shrader, a professor of philosophy at the State University of New York at Oneonta. Relatives told the Daily Star newspaper in Oneonta, N.Y., that Shrader and his wife, Barbara Donahoe Shrader, were visiting their daughter, Callie Doan, who lives in Hawaii.

Police said Shrader was hit by a car driven by a 22-year-old Kaneohe woman at 6:37 p.m. Monday. The accident happened in front of the Shell gas station at 45-1039 Kamehameha Highway, about 100 feet south of Pahia Road.

Police said the woman was waiting to make a left turn out of the north driveway of the gas station in a 2005 Saturn Ion sedan. Shrader was walking south on the sidewalk, approaching the car from the right, and stepped in front of the car, police said. The car had nosed out onto the roadway and Shrader was on the roadway as he tried to get around the car, police said.

The car accelerated and knocked Shrader to the ground, police said. He was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition with head injuries.

Shrader earned a doctorate from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1979 and pursued post doctoral study in Asian and comparative philosophy, traveling and conducting research and lecturing in 10 countries, according to his resume on the SUNY-Oneonta website. He was chairman of the philosophy department from 1986 to 1991 and from 1993 to 2008.

He was a visiting fellow at the East-West Center in Manoa in 2006 and 2009.
