Crash victim's kin sues government

The family of a woman who died in a head-on collision with a military vehicle in Hauula nearly two years ago is suing the federal government.

Vicki Norman, 57, died Oct. 23, 2008, when the minivan she was driving crashed into a 7-ton troop transport on Kamehameha Highway.

Her children filed a civil lawsuit in federal court Tuesday.

Police said the military vehicle crossed the center line.

The driver, 21-year-old Kaneohe Marine Eric Wycklendt, pleaded no contest in May to third-degree negligent homicide. He faces up to a year in prison when a state judge sentences him when he returns from an overseas deployment in January.

Meth trafficker gets 12 years

A 24-year-old Maui man who pleaded guilty to methamphetamine trafficking charges has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Tyler T. Wallace was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway. She had sentenced co-defendant Darren Estencion to 10 years in prison July 26. The 42-year-old Estencion had pleaded guilty to cocaine and meth charges.

Prosecutors say more than a pound of meth, more than 2 pounds of cocaine and more than $12,000 in cash were seized by Maui police from Estencion's residence. They say an additional 3.5 pounds of meth and over $60,000 in cash were seized from a storage locker maintained by Wallace.
